Tassier Sugar Bush

Maple syrup is one of the oldest agricultural commodities in the United States. Indians shared their skills with the Pilgrims and in Michigan, with the early settlers. Legend says that an American Indian was cooking venison roast for supper. It was beginning to dry out and she saw a broken limb of a sugar maple tree with what looked like water flowing from it. Not wanting to go to the creek for water, she poured the sap from the tree on her roast. By the time supper came, the roast was very dark and crusty. When the Chief came back into camp, he could smell the wonderful aroma of maple cooking and was very happy when he tasted it. The crusty brown coating was the first maple syrup.
